Frequently Asked Questions

What is RAVA?

RAVA (Rice AI Venture Accelerator) is an AI commercialization program run by Rice University and non sibi ventures. We match early-stage AI companies with enterprise partners for real, scoped pilots. If you are accepted and matched, you work on an actual problem with an actual enterprise customer.

What is RAVA's anticipated outcome?

Within three months of initial engagement, you should have a signed pilot underway with one of our corporate partners. The goal isn't a warm intro, it's a Pilot Charter with defined objectives, success metrics, and a clear path to a deeper commercial relationship.

What is the time commitment?

The program runs alongside your normal operations, not instead of them. The two-week Enterprise Readiness prep is RAVA's most time intensive phase, as we are preparing you for the partner introduction. Once you're in an active engagement, expect regular check-ins with the RAVA team and participation in the cohort curriculum.

Do I have to move to Houston?

No. RAVA's program is hybrid. Although some programming is in-person, including access to Rice University's campus and the Houston innovation ecosystem, there is no need for permanent relocation.

What will I learn?

RAVA provides you with a comprehensive curriculum covering what you need to operate at enterprise scale: security and compliance, enterprise sales cycles, partnership management, and scaling operations. RAVA's electives are stage-sensitive, meaning our additional programming is relevant to the company's needs.

Am I too early or too late to partcipate?

We work with early-stage companies. Series A is our sweet spot, but our many corporate partners in various sectors allow the "right fit" to vary. Pre-seed companies with compelling technology are welcome to apply, and Series B and C companies may find real value in the program too. If you're building serious AI, apply and let the match speak for itself.

Will I get an EIR?

Yes. Upon acceptance, you'll be matched with an Entrepreneur in Residence who has relevant enterprise and industry experience.

What's the investment?

Startups can receive up to $70,000 for up to 4% equity.

How does RAVA's selection process work?

RAVA doesn't run open application cohorts. We maintain a database of applicants and reach out when a specific partner opportunity matches your technology. Silence after you apply isn't a rejection, it means the right partner hasn't come through the door yet. When there's a match, you'll hear from us directly.

What happens before I meet a partner?

Before any partner introduction, you go through two weeks of Enterprise Readiness prep with our AI Lead. Week one is a structured diagnostic across six areas: data handling, sandboxing, security posture, demo readiness, procurement awareness, and reference readiness. Week two is active prep, including working sessions, a demo dry-run, and a briefing specific to the partner. We only make introductions we believe in.

What does RAVA look for in a startup?

We're looking for early-stage AI companies building solutions that Fortune 500 and public sector organizations can actually deploy. Current priority areas from our partners include AI for financial forecasting and demand planning, operations and supply chain automation, and scientific compute for energy, climate, and life sciences. However, if you're building something ambitious outside those areas, apply anyway.

What sectors are your partners in?

Energy and sustainability, industrials, healthcare, public sector, retail and logistics, and financials.

What happens after my pilot ends?

A completed engagement doesn't mean the relationship ends. Successful RAVA Startups get introduced to other partners in our network without going through the full intake process again.

Is there any IP or exclusivity involved?

No exclusivity. Your technology is yours. The program is designed to give you enterprise access, not to tie you to any one partner or platform.

Do I need to be a Rice University student or alum to apply?

No. We source startups from everywhere. Rice is a core part of what makes RAVA valuable, giving you access to top AI researchers, cutting-edge research, and a thriving innovation ecosystem, but membership in that community is not a requirement to participate.
